Nat'l Walk to Work Day!

Get out your sneakers and map out your route cause tomorrow is National Walk to Work Day!!

Recognizing this day is good for our physical health, our personal health, and the health of the planet as a whole.  If you're someone who typically uses a vehicle of some sort to commute to work you'll be pleasantly surprised by the benefits switching it up can bring.  By the time you arrive at your job you'll feel awake and energized and your head will be clear and ready for whatever comes your way.  Use the extra time it takes to walk as a way to slow down the day and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you.  It's too easy to lose sight of what's beyond work these days so putting in a little effort to reconnect with the environment might be just what you need to refresh your body and mind.

This action will require some advanced planning.  Here are some helpful tips to making it an easy and fun commute:

1.  Set your alarm early.
2.  Pack an on the go breakfast.
3.  Pick out appropriate footwear for your walk and for at work.
4.  Dress appropriately for the weather and your work conditions.

STOP!  Walking to Work is a FABULOUS gesture and an amazing way to get some fresh air while reducing your carbon emissions....BUT, sometimes it's just not a realistic option.  For those of you already making excuses in your head as to why you CAN'T walk to work - my job is too far away, there isn't a safe route to take, I'll have to wake up too early, etc. - I am lucky enough to work just over 1 mile from my house so I am able to easily walk to work (in the nice weather, I tend to ride my bicycle), but I get that it's not going to happen for some of you.  I invite everyone to recognize this day by walking ANYWHERE that you normally wouldn't or by taking a 30 minute walk at any point during the day to anywhere.  Do something, because even imperfect action is better than inaction.

If you typically drive your kid to school, walk with them instead.
If you typically drive your car to the store, walk to the store instead.
If you typically take the subway from the train station to your job, walk instead.

If you typically drive to work, and cannot walk consider carpooling or using mass transit.
Drop the car keys and transport smart - walk, ride your bike, skateboard, roller skate, carpool, take a bus, take a train...ANYTHING that lessens your negative impact on your health and the environment.  If walking  somewhere you would typically take your car is seriously out of the question I encourage you to make ANY change for the better in the way you transport.  By making a choice that is BETTER your are making a difference.

Let's talk about this.  How do you get to work?  What are your challenges with more efficient transportation?  Leave a comment about how you will get to work tomorrow or drop a pic of your walk to work day adventure on my social media accounts.
